He has an impressive record of playing minor league baseball in the San Ramon Valley, California area. In 1978, he was part of the Minor League World Series and in 1981, he was part of the Major League World Series with the Minor Leagues of the San Ramón Valley. His team was runner-up in every game for the World Championship.
In July 1995, Erik was awarded the Topps Baseball Card Company's “Minor League Player of the Month” award. During that same year, he was selected to start as shortstop for the National League's Triple A All-Star team.Coach Johnson has a wealth of experience when it comes to transitioning from being a professional player to getting paid to play baseball. His last professional baseball season was in 1996 when he played for the Florida Marlins organization as an infielder. After graduating with a degree in history, Santich-Hughes began his career as an interim pitching coach at San Jose State University. In addition to his coaching work, Steve also owns Bay Area Ballplayers in Moraga, an indoor sports training center and an outdoor artificial turf field. He then went on to coach for two seasons with the Colegio de San Mateo baseball team. Erik has been successful in his efforts as director of baseball in teaching individuals, teams, coaches and managers at many levels of baseball nationally and abroad. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1986 and by the San Francisco Giants in 1987. He also does all the training as coach of the San Francisco Giants Jr Giants Giants program which has more than 24,000 players in California, Oregon and Nevada.
As a career infielder, Erik played professional baseball for 10 years and in the major leagues in 1993 and 1994 with the San Francisco Giants organization under Dusty Baker. He has served as a baseball coach at Diablo Valley College and the Moraga Baseball Association where he has helped numerous young players develop their skills and reach their full potential.
